Mazatlan has the only seahorse farm in Mexico

One of the most fascinating marine animals is the seahorse.

This wild marine species is in danger of extinction, and as time goes by, they are even more at risk of disappearing from the seas and oceans.

 

Mazatlan is home to the only seahorse farm in Mexico. Specifically, it's located on Isla de la Piedra, and this is the first to be registered for commercial and legal sale in Mexico.

 

This farm aims to raise awareness and educate the public about the importance of producing seahorses responsibly and sustainably.

The Seahorse Expedition offers a unique and unparalleled experience with seahorses. They feature a sensational tour lasting approximately 40 minutes, allowing visitors to enjoy and learn about seahorses and sustainable aquaculture.

 

INGENS Cultivos Marinos is a seahorse farm operating since 2000. The tour offers a passionate and detailed presentation of the life of seahorses, as well as the importance of responsible and sustainable production.

 

On the tour, you will learn about the difficulty of raising seahorses in captivity and how they are threatened in the wild. You will also learn about the foods they eat (a significant amount of time and space on the farm is dedicated to cultivating their live food).

 

You will explore the live feeding laboratories, where you will learn about the complex feeding process of these animals, which is essential for their healthy growth.

 

You'll also receive a complete description of seahorses and what makes them a unique species. You'll learn about the farm's history and mission, highlighting its commitment to sustainability and marine conservation.

 

Eliezer Zuñiga Villareal is the biologist who runs and manages this farm. He explains that this isn't an exhibition, as visitors can see and interact with the seahorses, as well as learn more about their reproduction, birth, nutrition, and development.

 

The biologist also mentions that the problem with seahorses is that you have to understand how to farm them, and that they have developed their own biotechnology for proper seahorse farming in captivity.

 

As if that weren't enough, the tour also includes a visit to the grow-out tanks, where the baby seahorses grow. The main building houses a variety of aquariums. Here, you can see seahorses at different stages of development, from juveniles to adults.

 

Seahorse Expedition is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and has an admission fee of $350 pesos per adult and $250 pesos per child.
